Dennis Duane David

May 10, 1937 - May 26, 2017

Dennis Duane David, 80, of South Bend, IN, formerly of Hoopeston, IL, passed away on Friday May 26, 2017 in South Bend, IN. He was born May 10, 1937, in Allerton, IL, the son of James and Selma (Limp) David. He married Dorothy Key on December 7, 1958 and they had 43 wonderful years together, before cancer took her in 2005. He met Marian Eggebracht in 2008 and married her on February 18, 2009. She made him very happy for the last 8 years of his life. He is survived by his wife, Marian of South Bend, IN; 4 children, Derek (Donna Marie) David of Delphi, IN, Dirk (Ellen) David of Pence, IN, Dorothy Vaughn of Rossville, IL and Daron (Eva) David of Hoopeston, IL; four step-children, Cindy (Douglas) Johnson of Bowling Green, KY, John (Judy) Rockstroh of South Bend, IN, Diane (Randall) Kilbase of South Bend, IN and Bob (Laura) Rockstroh of Mason, OH; one sister, Eloise (Dirk) Crabtree of New Castle, IN; one brother, Morris (Theresa) David of Lady Lake, FL; 17 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy; one brother, Vernis David; one son-in-law, Robert Vaughn and one granddaughter, Shayla Vaughn. Dennis was a Vietnam veteran and retired as Lieutenant Commander after 20 years of service in the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, he received the Navy Commendation Award. After the service, he worked as the human resource officer at Stokely’s in Hoopeston, until his retirement. He later worked at Schumacher Electric and then owned his own wood refinishing business, Der Schreiner, in Hoopeston for many years. Dennis was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church in Rossville, IL. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #709, where he served as Grandmaster and was a past member of the Hoopeston Moose Lodge, where he was a former Governor. Dennis was involved with little league baseball, serving as a coach for the Great Lakes little league and umpiring games for 20 years. Dennis enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the South Bend Bridge Club and the American Contract Bridge Club. A visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 P.M. CST Wednesday May 31, 2017 at Anderson Funeral Home 427 E. Main St. Hoopeston, IL, with Masonic rites being held at 7:45 P.M. CST. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. CST Thursday June 1, 2017 at the funeral home, with Pastor Matt Stump officiating. Burial will follow in the Danville National Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Danville American Legion Post 210. Memorials may be made to Presence Cancer Care 806 N. Logan Ave. Danville, IL 61832.
